The focus of the iNortheast initiative for Northeast State Community College (NeSCC) is to provide tools and resources to the 21st century learner. Excellence in education requires that technology is seamlessly integrated throughout the educational programs. The individual use of iPads is a way to empower students to maximize their full potential and to prepare them for the workplace. Technology does not diminish the role of instructors but enhances their ability to engage students and facilitate learning.
For purposes of this policy, the term “faculty members” also includes teaching staff.
This policy is intended to complement the Tennessee Board of Regents’ IT Acceptable Uses Guidelines found at https://policies.tbr.edu/guidelines/it-acceptable-uses and Northeast State’s Acceptable Use of Computing Resources Policy found at http://cwis.northeaststate.edu/oie/policymanual/pol.asp.
Due to the nature of information and communications technology, this policy will undergo periodic review. NeSCC reserves the right to amend any sections or wording at any time.
All faculty members will be issued an iPad, case, USB cable, and charger.
As of May 2016, all institutionally required iPads will be secured through lease agreements with Apple.
Faculty members are responsible for learning to use the device. The Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) will facilitate training throughout the year.
The faculty member is responsible for care and good judgment when using iPads.
An iPad should be in its protective case during normal use and provide a suitable means for carrying the device. The guidelines below should be followed:
- iPads should always be in a protective case.
- Some carrying cases can hold other objects (such as folders and workbooks), but other items must be kept to a minimum to avoid placing too much pressure and weight on the iPad screen.
- Avoid bumping the iPad against any surface.
- iPads should never be stored in a vehicle.
The iPad screens can be damaged if subjected to rough treatment. The screens are particularly sensitive to damage from excessive pressure.
- Do not lean on the top of the iPad when it is closed.
- Do not place anything on the iPad.
- Do not place anything in the carrying case that will press against the screen.
- Clean the screen with a soft, dry cloth or anti-static cloth. Use of harsh chemicals will damage the screen.

iPads are intended for educational purposes. Faculty members will incorporate the iPad as a learning tool in the classroom. Refer to Northeast State Policy 01:13:00 iNortheast Mobile Technology Initiative.
Assigned iPads should not be given to students or other faculty members. Students may use the faculty member’s iPad under close supervision of the faculty.
Faculty will be required to use a passcode and are prohibited from sharing their passcode. Identification labels and other iPad identifiers should not be removed or modified.
Faculty members should always secure their iPad to protect their work and information. Under no circumstances should iPads be left in unsupervised areas. If an iPad is found in an unsupervised area, it should immediately be taken to Computer User Support Services.
Faculty members are allowed to connect to outside wireless networks on their iPads in order to assist them with iPad use while away from campus. The policies outlined in this document are also applicable to iPad use away from campus.
All applications, activity, and documents stored on the iPad are subject to inspection, review, and monitoring to confirm compliance with all Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), TBR and NeSCC policies and guidelines.
The iPad is assigned to the faculty member for the duration of his/her employment at NeSCC or until it is removed from inventory. Replacement of damaged or lost iPads will be managed by Computer User Support Services and the faculty member’s department. If employment is terminated, the faculty shall submit the iPad to his/her supervisor by the last day of employment.
Software & Applications
Faculty members are expected to download all updates prompted by NeSCC and Apple.
Faculty members may download apps from the iTunes store using their own accounts; however, any type of college related expenses must be discussed with the appropriate academic dean. Programs and apps installed on iPads must not violate any terms of this policy or the policies and guidelines listed above. Requests for app purchases can be submitted to Academic Council. When possible, app purchases will be aggregated to take advantage of volume purchasing. TBR eLearning and Mobilization can provide methods for obtaining more expensive trial apps for academic use.
Jailbreaking is the process that removes any limitations placed on the iPad by Apple. Jailbreaking results in a less secure device and is strictly prohibited.
Faculty members are encouraged to save work to Microsoft Office 365 One Drive for business from their iPad. Use of any other storage system is the sole responsibility of the user. It is the faculty member’s responsibility to ensure that work is not lost due to mechanical failure or accidental deletion.
Reporting Technical Issues, Damage, and Missing iPads
iPads that are broken or fail to work properly must be immediately taken to Computer User Support Services for an evaluation of the device. Upon availability, Computer User Support Services may loan a replacement iPad to faculty members should their issued devices require repair.
iPads that are lost must be immediately reported to Computer User Support Services.
iPads that are stolen on NeSCC campuses must be reported immediately to the Northeast State Police Department and Computer User Support Services. Police reports should not be filed if the iPad is misplaced or left unintentionally. If an iPad is stolen from a non-NeSCC location, it is the responsibility of the faculty member to report the iPad stolen to the NeSCC Police Department and the appropriate law enforcement agency, as well as to NeSCC’s Computer User Support Services.
